Chaos at Howe Community Park Leaves 4 People Shot in the Arden-Arcade Area of Sacramento

Sacramento authorities are examining a gunfire incident that took place late Saturday at Howe Park at the moment Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies were shutting down an unlawful assembly of an estimated several hundred individuals.

What Led to the Shooting

Officers from the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office initially responded to Howe Park around 6:30 PM on April 18 after being notified of subjects reportedly carrying hidden weapons. Not long after, a second caller reported regarding a reported physical confrontation unfolding inside the park.

A law enforcement helicopter scanned the area from the air but was unable to locate the reported altercation. Even so, it became clear that an enormous crowd had gathered without authorization without official sanction.

How the Shooting Unfolded

Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies moved to clear the area by surrounding the park and using their vehicle PA systems telling those gathered to go home. About 15 minutes were spent for individuals to vacate.

While deputies worked to disperse the gathering that upwards of 20 gunshots echoed through the night. The rapid succession of shots sparked chaos as hundreds ran. Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies swiftly started looking for those injured.

Four Victims Hospitalized

Altogether, four gunshot victims were confirmed as gunshot victims. Those injured — comprising three men and one woman each apparently in their 20s — were taken to Sacramento area hospitals. Doctors and nurses reported that two of the four had injuries classified as immediate, one had moderate injuries, and one sustained minor gunshot wounds. According to authorities, no fatalities were reported and all four were stable.

Sacramento Metro Fire arrived on scene and helped care for those who had been shot prior to hospital transport.

Crime Scene Evidence

The center of the incident was determined to have been concentrated on Cottage Way next to the Home Depot store on the 2200 block of Howe Ave. Detectives found additional shell casings on Cottage Way. Projectile impacts were observed in the wrought iron perimeter fencing bordering the Home Depot. This evidence confirmed that at least one shooter had been discharging rounds toward the south from the Cottage Way area toward the Home Depot. The Home Depot was temporarily locked down during the incident. Crime scene personnel continued working throughout the night.

Arrests Made

Details gathered via scanner audio confirmed that a vehicle identified as a Kia had been detained in the Solano County area. Four occupants were stopped and detained.
